How to use

From a themed palette to a finished design

Every palette here ships five colors on purpose: a dark, a light, and three characters in between. Copy the set, then let the quietest chip cover most of the layout (roughly 60%), a supporting chip about 30%, and save the loudest one for the 10% that should draw the eye — buttons, headlines, one illustration. That 60-30-10 split is why a “Christmas” design reads festive instead of loud.

Why themes work

Color association does half the design work

People decide what a design is about before they read a word of it. Orange and black says Halloween in a tenth of a second; teal and calm blue says clinic; navy and brass says law firm. A themed palette borrows years of built-up association for free — which is exactly why brands in the same industry keep landing on the same hues. Start from the expected palette, then bend one chip to make it yours.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these palettes in commercial work?

Yes. Plain color combinations are not copyrightable, and everything on ScanHue is free to use — in client work, products, branding, anything. No attribution needed.

How do I apply a five-color palette to a real design?

Use the 60-30-10 rule: one quiet color covers about 60% of the design (usually the lightest chip), a secondary covers 30%, and the loudest chip stays at 10% as an accent. The remaining two colors handle text and borders.

Will these colors pass accessibility checks?

The swatches are starting points, not guaranteed text pairs. Before putting text on a colored background, run the exact pair through the Contrast Checker — and if it fails, generate a darker step of the same hue with the Shades tool.

How were the palettes chosen?

Each theme is built from its strongest color associations — the hues people name first when they think of Christmas, a law office or a matcha latte — then balanced so the five chips cover dark, light and accent roles.
